Kodaikanal: Stepping towards Organic Farm

As we hear the word Organic Farming, the first impression we get can be slight complicated. But it is as simple as its techniques. Organic farming is nothing but the phenomenon of producing food naturally without using any kind of manufactured or synthetic harmful chemicals. Organic farming completely depends on the techniques such as crop rotation, compost, green mature, biological pest control. Unfortunately, now a days all we can see are chemically grown food products in and around us which have done some serious damage not only to health of the people but also to the planet.

According to an article in english daily, The Times of India, published on JUNE 1st, Kodaikanal has gained back its momentum in Organic Farming. According to S. Raja Mohamed, Deputy Director of Horticulture, people in Kodaikanal have realised the benefits of vermicompost and are eagerly setting up units. Some of the farmers namely A.Venkatesan Iyyer from Vilpatti and K Rajesh Kannan from Periyur, near Kodaikanal have already started vermicomposting units and are also ready to supply the same to others who need Organic Manure. The department has set the target for both of them and has given subsidy on first-come-first-serve basis. Both of them are required to produce 25 tonnes of manure per year which will be used for their personal use and also in helping others.

Mr. Mohammed has also added that organic farming has gained momentum not only for its quality but also for its minimum cost of production. It was 10 years ago when a gradual increase was seen again in the momentum of Organic Farming in Horticulture. Initially farmers were little reluctant in adopting this practise as it had a bad yield at the beginning stage. People were started going for artificial fertilisers with money being the only motive but because of which not only money but the disease also started multiplying. However, people have now realised the goodness of Organic Farming and have slowly started moving towards it.

Nature has always been an “Role model” since it doesn’t use any inputs nor demand unreasonable quantities of water.
